“We can turn our pain into pearls of wisdom.”

John Newell MNCPS (Acc)

Psychotherapeutic Counsellor

I am an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. I offer counselling to adults, creating a confidential, safe and collaborative space to explore whatever is on your mind.

I completed my clinical training working with clients at the highly regarded mental health charity Mind.

I work with a broad range of issues, including anxiety, stress, burnout, emotional overwhelm, panic attacks, phobias, low mood and depression, bereavement and grief, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, eating concerns, self-sabotage, procrastination and life transitions.

I have particular experience supporting people who are struggling with addiction, whether that relates to substances, behaviours, or emotional dependency.

I also work with clients processing adverse experiences and complex trauma—those long-standing emotional wounds that may not always be visible, but which can deeply affect how we feel and relate to the world.

I am comfortable working with transpersonal aspects of the human psyche and supporting clients who wish to explore spirituality and existential questions.

Comfortable room where therapy sessions are available in person at John's consulting room in Marlow or online.

My approach is pluralistic, which means I tailor therapy to each person’s unique needs.

Sometimes that involves person-centred, open-ended exploration, while at other times we might draw on tools from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or reflect on how early experiences may still be shaping your present. At the heart of my work my aim is to provide  a safe, warm, empathetic therapeutic relationship—one that supports you to feel understood, accepted, and empowered.

People often come to therapy when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves or others. Some have a clear reason for seeking support; others just sense something isn’t quite right. Together, we can explore what’s going on beneath the surface and work towards greater clarity, relief, or self-acceptance.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a commercial lawyer, and so I understand what it’s like to function in extreme high-pressure environments while feeling obliged to conceal inner struggles.

My aim is not to “fix” you, but to walk alongside you as you reconnect with your inner resources. Therapy can be a space to untangle confusion, process pain, and move towards a more authentic, fulfilling life.

Sessions are available in person at my consulting room in Marlow or online.  I also see clients in person one day a week in Henley on Thames. If you’d like to talk about whether I might be the right therapist for you, I warmly invite you to get in touch.
